GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW) – Georgetown County held a full scale emergency exercise for a mass casualty incident on Wednesday including more than 10 agencies.
The scenario for the training involved a school bus that collided with a train on a field trip. This exercise comes just 11 days after a bus crash happened in Georgetown County where 23 people were hurt involving a Williamsburg Transit bus.
Georgetown County Public Information Officer Jackie Broach-Akers says this scenario has been planned for months despite the recent crash.
“Unfortunately it’s something that we have recently seen, things like this do happen they can happen so we have to make sure all of our emergency responders are ready for this,” said Broach-Akers.
Students from Carvers Bay High School filled the bus covered the fake blood and scrapes and yelled for helped as firefighters transported them to local emergency rooms.
Assistant Chief with the Georgetown County Fire Department Tony Hucks says this scenario is a great learning opportunity for firefighters because it allows them to practice working with a large group of parents at once in a mass casualty scenario.
“You have to do the whole reunification process, parents are worried, they don’t know where they went, we may of transported six to one hospital, and 12 to another hospital,” said Hucks.
