GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW) – The Georgetown County election board said they’ve determined that a council member doesn’t live at the address on his voter registration application.
According to Chairman Billy Altman, of the Georgetown County Board of Voter Registration and Elections, the election board determined after Friday’s election hearing that District 5 council member Austin Beard does not live at the address he has on his voter registration application, and therefore it is invalid.
However, the board of elections doesn’t have the power to remove him from office.
Jackie Broach, with Georgetown County, said the county also doesn’t have the power to remove him from office. She also told News13 there appears to be no legal precedent for this type of thing.
Beard’s term began in January 2017 and runs until December 2020.
News13 has reached out to Beard to ask him about this situation and what he plans to do following the board’s announcement.
If we get a response, we will provide updates.
