Some residents in North Myrtle Beach were woken by repetitive foghorns Friday night.
According to Pat Dowling with the City of North Myrtle Beach, the horns were due to an oceangoing dredge that is part of the beach renourishment project in North Myrtle Beach.
In a press release, the City says “Sounding the foghorn is required by Coast Guard regulation when visibility is restricted by fog or haze. The horn must sound two times prior to moving from the dredge discharge line or the offshore area from which the sand is taken. Also, it must sound every minute or so when traveling, and it must sound when it sees another vessel within a certain distance on radar.”
The contractor for the project should finish the dredge in the next couple of days.
