SOCASTEE, SC (WBTW) – As residents in the Bridgecreek neighborhood in Socastee pick up the pieces after many homes were flooded with water from Hurricane Florence, neighbors say they are now having to fight another battle- looters.
Bridgecreek neighbors say they are having to take matters into their own hands to protect their property from thieves.
Keith Moore, a Bridgecreek resident who’s home flooded 3 feet, says he is going to great lengths to protect his property by sleeping in a tent on his front porch.
“Even though we got a rental apartment, FEMA paid for one month, we’re staying here to protect from looters,” Moore said.
Because his front door will no longer close due to flood damage, Moore says that camping out is a way to make sure no one steals from his house.
“I have faith that things will work out, but I believe in God, and He gave me common sense to not just sit here and expect things to go on their own, so I’m thinking for myself as well,” Moore said.
According to Moore, there are a few neighbors who also working to protect other people’s property by patrolling the Bridgecreek area for looters at night.
“A few neighbors are walking around and checking things. Everybody’s trying to come together to make this work,” Moore said.
Although Moore says he has only been sleeping in the tent on his front porch for a few nights, he will stay on the front porch as long as he needs to.
