Shankeka Brown, a native of Kingstree, has owned the SHB International Hair Studio on Third Avenue in Downtown Conway for four years, but starting June 4th, the salon will expand to the SHB International Hair School of Cosmetology.

Brown said she always knew she wanted to own a large salon, but didn’t know opening a beauty school was in her future.

“God showed me another vision, and he showed me a cosmetology school,” Brown said. “Once I went to the state board website and see all the requirements, I had everything I needed. Then I started the journey of opening a cosmetology school.”

Brown recently lowered the school’s enrollment cost from $2,000 to $500 and says the first 20 students who enroll, will receive a $900 scholarship; funding which totals $18,000. She tells News13 the enrollment cost includes all of the supplies and books needed for the courses.

“I know how hard it is to have the funding, and when you first open a school I don’t have financial aid,” Brown said. “I thought about helping people who really want a chance to live their dreams. So I’m offering the 18-thousand dollars.”
