A female inmate died of natural causes after being found unresponsive at the J. Rueben Long Detention Center on Tuesday. 

A press release from the Horry County Sheriff’s Office says 67-year-old Sharon Kay Envey was found unresponsive in a cell around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Detention Center staff were alerted and started CPR while waiting for EMS to arrive. Envey was transported to Conway Medical Center, where she died shortly after. A preliminary autopsy investigation revealed Envey’s death was due to natural causes. 

Envey was booked into the detention center on Sunday following an arrest by the North Myrtle Beach Police Department, according to the release. Online booking records for the county state Envey was facing several charges including simple possession of marijuana.

The release also says the Detention Center’s protocol surrounding inmate deaths includes contacting the State Law Enforcement Division. SLED officials responded to the Detention Center and an investigation is ongoing. A preliminary internal investigation indicates no found play is involved.
