CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The flooding after Hurricane Florence has caused extremely long traffic delays all around the city.

Traffic resumed moving on U.S. Highway 501 Bypass Friday night after it was closed for more than eight hours. That’s because National Guard members were putting more sandbags on a barrier wall, protecting the road from flooding. South Carolina Highway 544, which ends at 501 bypass was also backed up several miles Friday afternoon.

Horry County is advising businesses, especially those along the beaches, to rethink how to schedule shifts for their employees living near Conway. That includes not having a traditional 8-to-5 or 9-to-5 schedule, starting 12-hour shifts or even letting employees working from home or remotely.

One real estate lawyer says he found a way to another way to get to the Horry County courthouse, avoiding sitting in traffic.

“Wednesday, it took me three hours from Myrtle Beach and (Friday), I shredded off the sleeves and I started shredding my bike,” said Brett Branham of Tide Law Firm. “I go halfway, hit traffic, use my bike. I go about 15 miles an hour. Boom, I’m at the courthouse in 45 minutes. Sure enough, I skipped all the traffic and made a lot of people jealous.”

Traffic delays are expected all over the Conway area for the next several days as the Waccamaw River isn’t forecasted to crest until Tuesday.

Drivers are advised to avoid driving through Conway until after the flooding unless it’s absolutely necessary.
