GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW)- Georgetown County prepares for record setting floods after Hurricane Florence.

SCDOT said at this time, there is no directive or scheduled time to close down US-17 between the Waccamaw River and Great Pee Dee River.

Georgetown county is expected to see unprecedented flood levels. Flood waters could reach upwards ten feet.

SCDOT, state, local, and federal agencies are monitoring the rivers and say they will let people know if or when this section of US 17 will close.

Crews installed 5,000 feet of aqua dams on Highway 17 from the Waccamaw Neck area south of Pawleys Island, to the city of Georgetown.

As of Tuesday, all major roadways are open.

“They just happen when nature dictates that. They happen so we don’t have a time when the bridge is going to close. It will close when water levels rise significantly enough the travel becomes unsafe,” said spokesperson Jackie Broach-Acres.

The county is asking people to take this threat very seriously. While they don’t have a mandatory evacuation, county officials are strongly urging 8,000 people in flood-prone areas to leave while the roads are still open.
