A woman died following a crash on Highway 17 in Horry County on Friday.

Horry County Coroner Michelle McSpadden identified the woman who died as 69-year-old Brenda Spires Epps, of Myrtle Beach.

The crash happened at 9:41 a.m. on Friday on Highway 17 near Middle Gate Road in the North Myrtle Beach area, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Two vehicles were involved in the crash: a Dodge pickup truck and a Toyota Avalon car.

The Dodge pickup truck was traveling northbound on Highway 17 and the Toyota Avalon was traveling westbound on Middle Gate Drive, Southern said. The driver of the Dodge pickup truck, identified by Southern as Luke Prince of North Myrtle Beach, “disregarded a traffic control device” and struck the Toyota Avalon in the driver’s door.

Prince was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, Southern also said. The driver of the Toyota Avalon was wearing a seatbelt and sustained injuries. They were taken by EMS to Grand Strand Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the SCHP.

No information regarding possible charges or the identity of the deceased driver are available.
