CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – On Saturday, Bob White, a 92-year-old Conway man, met the two off-duty Myrtle Beach Police Officers who gave him life-saving CPR after finding him collapsed in September.
White’s son, Jeffrey White, held a going away party for his dad who is moving to New Jersey to live with family. He says that he wanted the chance to thank the officers in person.
“I knew it was something I wanted to do,” White said. “I called them, and they don’t like a lot of publicity, but I said, ‘My gosh, you changed my life. I’d like to meet you, I’d like my dad to meet you, and my brother’s here too.”
Officer Bryant Howland of the Myrtle Beach Police Department was off-duty when he found White after he collapsed outside of the gym. He started performing CPR and called his partner, Officer Struckus, who helped him revive White.
“90-something years-old; I’ve seen people half his age who don’t come back from stuff like that,” Howland said.
For Howland, meeting White and seeing him in good health was humbling.
“I never did anything that day for any kind of gratitude, or any of this really. I just did it because that’s what people should do for each other when they’re in need,” Howland said.
However, White and his family say that if it weren’t for the two officers’ quick action that day, White wouldn’t be starting ‘a new chapter’ where he’ll be moving to New Jersey.
It could’ve all ended, and we’ve been given a new lease on life,” White said. “Sometimes that feeling when you know they’re coming to help you, it’s just a feeling of need, and these guys responded to the bell.”
