CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The city council discussed Monday what it wants to do with an old elementary school.

Conway will soon get the Whittemore Park elementary school building as a gift from the Horry County school district. On Monday, city council discussed hundreds of thousands of dollars in potential funding options like grants.

The goal is to convert the abandoned school into a community center with activities for kids and adults.

“From public speaking, to English as a second language, to writing resumes, whatever the case may be,” said Conway mayor Barbara Blain-Bellamy. “There have been some other ideas, however, to add to that, like, for example, bringing in an element of the arts.”

While there’s no cost or timeline for any project yet, Conway’s city administrator has previously said demolishing the building would cost more than $600,000.
