CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Family members, friends and strangers gathered at the Conway Marina Riverwalk to memorialize the one year anniversary of the fatal Crescom Bank robbery that left two employees dead.

Donna Major’s daughter says she was texting her mother about the solar eclipse while she was working on August 21st 2017 at the Crescom Bank in Conway.

“She told me it was cloudy here and it was dark, and she probably wouldn’t be able to see it, and I said, ‘mom it’s cloudy here, but we can still see the sun.’ Not 10 minutes later, she met the sun,” her daughter said.

That day, Donna Major and her co-worker, Katie Skeen were shot and killed at the bank during a robbery.

“We could’ve let this wreck us, absolutely wreck us, but instead we’ve gotten tighter and closer together every day,” another family member said.

Donna Major and Katie Skeen’s lives were remembered at Tuesday’s service through prayers and songs. Family members, friends, and even strangers were in attendance, and some spoke about the lives of the two women.

Edna DeWitt, a Conway resident, says she had never met either of the two victims, however, she felt it in her heart to come.

“I wanted to let them know, and let their family know that we’re with you,” DeWitt said.

She says she felt uplifted following the prayer service.

“Just to come together here tonight, it helps me to see it in a different light. To hear how they are dealing with this and their peace within, and inviting other people to come,” DeWitt said.

In honor of Donna Major and Katie Skeen, the South Carolina Bank Association and Crescom founded two scholarships and awarded them to two Crescom bank employees’ children to use toward their college tuition.
