A Coast RTA bus crashed near Pawleys Island, sending over a dozen people to the hospital.
The South Carolina Cad says the crash happened around 5:05 p.m. on Ocean Highway at South Causeway Road.
Doug Eggiman, with Midway Fire Rescue, confirms the crash. He says 14 people were taken to area hospitals for treatment and 14 others refused transport. He also says no injuries appear to be critical.
According to Eggiman, one lane of Highway 17 South is closed as crews wait for a tow truck to arrive to tow the bus away.
Eggiman also says the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire District, and Horry County Fire Rescue assisted.
Coast RTA released a statement Monday evening saying in part “Coast RTA is working with South Carolina Highway Patrol to complete the investigation as well as conducting its own internal investigation regarding the accident. Coast RTA’s number one priority is safety for its passengers and its employees. We trust the driver had the safety of her passengers in mind with the decisions she made today. Coast RTA’s thoughts are with the passengers who were aboard the bus at the time of the accident and will be reaching out to them in the days ahead.” This statement says the accident happened around 5 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 and South Causeway and only involved the bus.
