The long-awaited busy season is upon us, and the City of Myrtle Beach proclaimed May 20-27 as Beach Safety Week to remind locals and visitors how to stay safe while at the beach this summer.
City officials say, simple things like knowing how to exit a rip current and understanding what the beach safety flags mean, can help keep your family safe.
“Over the course of the summer we will have millions of people on the beach,” spokesman for the City, Mark Kruea said. “The area gets 20 million people and we want to make sure those 20 million people go home safely and have a great experience while they are in Myrtle Beach, that just requires a little extra thought while you’re out there in the middle of Mother Nature.”
Other things safety tips included in the proclamation include, wearing sunscreen, staying hydrated and entering the water feet-first.
Kruea says the City relies heavily on the Myrtle Beach Fire Department for its main on-beach safety resource.
“We have firefighters who are also medical professionals out there on the beach making sure that everyone is having a good time and that they are there in case we have an emergency, and we have them out there in fairly large numbers,” Kruea said.
