MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- The City of Myrtle Beach honored and remembered those who died while serving our country.
Veterans stood to remember their fellow soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice
“It’s a way to honor the veterans that aren’t here and the ones that are here,” said Chuck Galuppo.
Fallen heroes were honored with the presentation of colors, service songs, and the laying of the wreath.
“You look at the laying of that wreath and you think about all of those people that came before us. Who gave up everything so we can have what we have,” said Rod Gragg, Director of Crescom Bank Center for military studies at CCU.
The Grand Strand chapter of Rolling Thunder, a non profit group that raises money for veterans and their families memorialized POW’s and MIA’s by setting a table with 6 chairs; one for each branch of the military and laid a hat at each seat.
“We have a lot of POW’s and MIA’s still missing and one of our main goals is to bring everybody home,” said Galuppo.
Kim-Cameron King served 11 tours in the last 10 years. He opened this morning’s ceremony touching on issues affecting younger veterans getting back from war.
“Almost 22 veterans a day are committing suicide for various reasons,” said King.
He says the VA is working to combat that more than ever.
“It’s something prior to getting out of the military they talk to you about to watch out for. To get you connected to the VA so you can work on the issues you have,” said King.
