LORIS, SC (WBTW) – The City of Loris is working to get the community more involved and hear what concerns residents are having by having monthly public meetings.

City of Loris Clerk Treasurer, Kenya Wright, said the city recently attended a conference where they heard feedback from other cities about hosting public meetings for residents. Now, Loris wants to do the same thing. Wright said this will give people a chance to voice concerns about issues going on in the community aside from city council meetings.

“If you go to a council meeting and give your address, say your ditch needs to be cleaned out, council’s not going to remember that,” said Wright. “They’re not overseeing day-to-day, but you come to this public meeting and speak to a department head that’s in charge of that, he’s going to see that that address is written down and that it’s cleaned out.”

Wright said these public meetings are not limited in what can be addressed. “Your public works, recreation, police department, even here at city hall,” said Wright. This is part of the city’s plan to be more accessible to the community and make sure all residents can be involved with city activities. In the next two months, Wright said the city is hoping to begin live streaming council meetings as well.

The first public meeting is Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the public safety building on Walnut St. Light refreshments will be served and anyone is welcome to attend. Wright said to keep checking the city’s Facebook page for future meeting dates.
