The City of Conway has started a new drainage project in the Chicora neighborhood.

The city said the project should take about six months to complete.

The city also said it will significantly improve drainage for the Chicora neighborhood, which often sees street flooding and ponding in yards.

“The infrastructure in that area is older. They’ve had collapsed pipes in some areas. They’ve had some areas that are just backed up,” said Taylor Newell, spokesperson for the City of Conway. “So, by approving that project ahead of any heavy rains, we’ll hopefully be able to alleviate any future flooding.”

Drivers in the area can expect some lane closures.

The city set aside about $250,000 for the project a few years ago.

Another $500,000 in grant money from the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure authority will also help pay for it.
