Bucksport family opens their home to community for Thanksgiving meal

BUCKSPORT, SC (WBTW) – The Mayfield family in Bucksport have been preparing a Thanksgiving feast for their community for 18 years, however, after recent flooding in Horry County, they say this year’s dinner is even more important.

“It started out on a small, little patio and every year it would just build and build,” Margie Green, who decorated for this year’s Thanksgiving event said.

Following recent flooding, William Mayfield, one of the hosts, says he wanted this year’s community feast to be a way for local flood survivors to escape the stress.

“People still don’t have their homes, and people are still struggling to get to their normal life they had,” Mayfield said. “They got somewhere to come, sit down, and relax with their family and friends and just enjoy without having to worry.”

“You give them some kind of normalcy back, and you just enjoy, and for that moment you’re out of that tragic thing that happened to you,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield’s wife, Francis Mayfield cooks for three days before the event, but she says the work pays off in the end.

“That’s the way God made me, full of love. We want everyone to come together and be together and enjoy one another,” Mayfield said.
