COLUMBIA, SC (WBTW) – A bill that could lead to changing the border between Horry County and Georgetown County passed second reading in the South Carolina House Wednesday.
The South Carolina Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office noticed an error along the border near Garden City Beach and Burgess. About 200 properties are affected from the Atlantic Ocean to the Waccamaw River.
The errors mean some people who consider themselves residents of Horry County technically live in Georgetown County.
“Most people want to stay in Horry County,” Rep. Russell Fry, one of the bill’s sponsors said. “They purchased land that they thought was Horry County. Horry County thought it was Horry County. Georgetown County thought it was Horry County. These folks, largely, the ones I’ve talked to, want to stay where they’re at.”
The legislation would temporarily make affected properties part of Horry County and call for a referendum in November to allow affected residents to make the final decision.
Rep. Lee Hewitt also sponsored the bill.
The bill has to pass one more reading to move from the state House to the Senate.
