A bill aimed at protecting homeowners from some criminals will not move forward in South Carolina.
The goal of the locksmith licensing bill was to keep convicted burglars, sex offenders or other criminals from becoming locksmiths and gaining access to your home.
All the locksmiths that News13 spoke to for a special report supported the bill. However, a locksmith in the South Carolina Locksmith Association expressed some concerns during a hearing Wednesday. That was enough for lawmakers to kill the bill.
Sen. Sandy Senn of Charleston served on a senate committee that considered the locksmith licensing bill last year.
Senn told News13 Wednesday that the locksmith association president said the association did not want to be licensed or regulated and the bill was killed shortly after that.
Count on News13 as we continue to follow any similar efforts on locksmith licensing moving forward.
