Beach renourishment along the Grand Strand is underway.

The project began in August and will last through December.

On Wednesday, WBTW News13 spoke with the Army Corps of Engineers. They said the project will end up using more than 1 million cubic yards of sand to help restore the beaches.

“A normal renourishment schedule is anywhere between seven and 10 years,” said Lt. Col. Jeff Palazzini with the Army Corps of Engineers. “As a result of the hurricane, specifically Hurricane Irma last year, we received 100 percent federal funding to be able to do this coastal storm damage reduction project.

The project is expected to be finished by December 15.

The process of the project can be tracked on the Army Corps of Engineers website.
