Crews will begin work to renourish 2.7 miles of coastline in North Myrtle Beach this week.

This phase of the project was delayed due to Hurricane Florence as the Surfside Beach, Garden City and Myrtle Beach areas were renourished ahead of North Myrtle Beach.

The federally funded project will take between 30 and 45 days to complete and crews will work around the clock, according to City officials with North Myrtle Beach.

News13 asked Patrick Dowling, the spokesperson for North Myrtle Beach how the project could affect travel plans.

“Those areas of the beach where they are actually pumping sand will be closed to people,” Dowling said. “Generally it travels at a rate of two to three days per section so they move pretty quickly if the weather is good and the machinery doesn’t break down.”

Dowling did say the project will halt for Memorial Day Weekend and you can track progress online to know what areas of the beach are closed if you visit the Charleston Core of Engineers website and use the Myrtle Beach Web Mapper.

“You can zero in on North Myrtle Beach and it shows an aerial view of our beach,” Dowling said. “In green it will show the open sections and then in different colors it will show planning sections and the actual section where work is taking place.”
