MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A group of artists is trying to highlight a different type of attraction along the coast called the Grand Strand Art Trail.

One of the locations on the trail is ART Burger Sushi Bar on North Ocean Boulevard. It serves up food next to several paintings on sale.

The restaurant is among 21 businesses or museums on the new art trail.

“The big goal is to give people visiting Myrtle Beach a new thing to do that’s kind of a classy, fun thing to do,” says John Morken, executive director of The Arts Grand Strand. “It’s educational. You’re going to see a lot of beautiful things.”

The art trail showcases galleries and artsy restaurants from Calabash, North Carolina, to Georgetown. Tens of thousands of postcards around the Grand Strand will list the stops, encouraging visitors to see new places.

Gallery owners say they hope the trail will grow the area’s art scene.

“You go to places like Charleston, they have a big art community, Savannah and Wilmington,” said Woody Bauer, who’s the director of Seacoast Art Gallery in The Market Common in Myrtle Beach. “This, hopefully, is going to help put Myrtle Beach on the map.”

William Miller says he’s hopeful his Main Street art gallery, William H. Miller Studios and Fine Art Gallery, will sell more paintings.

“It’s going to help expose the artists to a larger clientele,” Miller said. I’ve already had two people from out of town, Maryland and Virginia, come in. They’re very excited that, now, that they have a map that they can follow.”

Morken created The Arts Grand Strand, which organized the art trail. It’s a nonprofit group that promotes fine arts programs.

Morken says he hopes the trail will help anyone who wants to discover hidden gems on the Grand Strand.

“Hopefully, the tourists will be pleased about it and really see a different side of Myrtle Beach that you would never know exists,” Morken said.

Guided tours of the trail will also start in the fall. They’ll be organized by Storehouse Tours.
