RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – “Do you really know what’s in that egg from fast food restaurants?”
That’s the question many breakfast eaters and executives at Panera are asking.
In fact, Panera is asking the government to define what exactly is considered an egg.
Owner of Natural Health Strategies, Rebecca Hale, says many food chains claim they are serving eggs but nutritionists say even though some fast food chains claim to serve eggs, you may not be eating a “real” one.
“[Real eggs] will have nutrients in it that prevent you from getting high cholesterol from eating eggs…you don’t have to worry about that so much,” explained Hale.
Hale stated that often times, fast food restaurants are serving egg products mixed with extra fillers like unmodified corn starch, xanthan gum, citric acid, powdered cellulose and artificial coloring.
She said it’s something many customers may not be aware of and that the extra ingredients could pose some health concerns.
“That’s obviously going to lessen the nutritionist aspect of it and also increase other potential problems like having trouble digesting them and it could actually be bad for you,” stated Hale.
If you are concerned, she said the best thing to do is ask if the egg is made without fillers or check a menu for details.
