MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The 10th Annual Sparks Family Golf Classic helps give hard-working students the gift of higher education.
“We think there is nothing better than helping people pay for their college education. It’s a big expense for people,” Susan Sparks, sales manager at Sparks Toyota said.
The Sparks family created the tournament 10 years ago, which helps raise money for scholarships for local students attending Coastal Carolina Univerisity. In the last decade, the scholarships have fully covered the costs of 12 students’ tuition.
“It can really make a difference for them because when they’re coming out of school, it may either eliminate the fact of having a college loan and starting out in their new career already in debt, so we feel it really gives them a leg up when starting out in life,” Sparks said.
Mya Roblee, a Sparks Family Scholarship recipient, and a freshman at CCU is proof of that.
“I knew my parents weren’t going to pay for college for me so once I got the scholarship I was really excited,” Roblee said.
Roblee is studying biochemistry and plans to use her degree from CCU to ultimately work in the medical field as a general surgeon or hospitalist. She says the scholarship is helping her save for the years of school ahead.
“It’s kind of helping me for the future because I won’t have those loans now, later. I know medical school is going to be expensive so maybe I can start saving my own money now for later,” Roblee said.
