The South Carolina National Guard is in the WBTW News13 viewing area helping protect lives and property.
National guardsmen from across the country are also in the area, including members from the Alaska National Guard.
Twenty-two members of the Alaska National Guard and two Black Hawk helicopters are now at the McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Eastover, east of Columbia. This group was chosen specifically for search and rescue missions, something they do a lot of in Alaska.
One gaurdsman said they are concerned about the Nichols and Galivants Ferry areas because there could be high levels of water in that area.
“We’re used to operating and responding to events off the road system, things that are isolated via terrain or weather. In South Carolina, with some of these flood events in possibly isolated communities that’s something that’s normal for us,” says Chief Warrant Officer J.D. Miller, with the Alaska National Guard. “The fear right now is that the town of Nichols, there’s going to be a lot of water in that area.”
