MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Dr. Victor Archambeau, Chairman of Faces and Voices of Recovery, or FAVOR Grand Strand, says there are very few resources for people struggling with addiction in some of the hardest hit areas of the state.
“If you go through the cemetery in Andrews with someone who knows their way around, they’ll tell you, ‘this was an overdose; that person died of an overdose,'” says Archambeau.
The majority of recovery groups and rehab centers are located in the more popular parts of our area, like Myrtle Beach and Conway, leaving rural places like Andrews and Longs out in the dark.
“We have people coming here, but when people from Andrews come here, it’s almost an hour and a half to two hours to get here,” says Archambeau.
According to Archambeau, having a recovery group that is close by is a key part of the recovery process.
“I think if you tell your pastor or your mom, ‘boy, I really feel like using today,’ they’re gonna look at you like you’re crazy, and if you tell somebody else who’s been there that, they’ll look at you and say, ‘I’ve been there too and here’s what I do when I feel that way to get through it,'” he says.
FAVOR Grand Strand has extended their weekly recovery meetings to help rural areas like Andrews and Longs. The Andrews all-recovery meeting is every Monday, from 7 to 8 p.m. at 310 N. Morgan Ave.
All-recovery meetings in Longs are held at the Waterbrook Community Church every Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
