A new study underway in Horry and Georgetown counties will take a closer look at the heroin and opioid epidemic on the Grand Strand.
Horry-Georgetown Technical College Professor Renee Causey will lead the $60,000 study, which will assess the state of the epidemic in the two counties. Causey has been tasked to research local policies, identify current initiatives, highlight gaps in service and recommend improvements on the issue.
“We need to identify what’s working and what isn’t and craft a strategy to halt the abuse, which is claiming so many of our residents and harming our families,” Causey stated in a press release.
The City of Myrtle Beach and Horry County each contributed $12,500 towards the study. According to officials, Georgetown County and the City of Georgetown each contributed $5,000. Other funding partners include HCA, McLeod Health, Tidelands Health and Conway Medical Center with $6,250 contributions.
Research for the study has started. Causey is expected to have a report to the stakeholders in less than 4 months.
