MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – One hundred five different vendors made their way to Myrtle Beach for the 5th Annual Food Bank Craft Fair.
Each year, the event benefits the Lowcountry Food Bank by requiring both its vendors and shoppers to donate canned or boxed goods for entry.
Mickey Davis started the craft fair after seeing the unemployment and hunger around Horry and Georgetown counties, especially during the winter months.
“My husband and I have been volunteers for U.S. foreign aid, and we’ve seen real, real poverty, and yet when you come home and see that your own people don’t have food, we have to do something to help,” Davis said.
The Lowcountry Food Bank estimates around 14 percent of the population in Horry and Georgetown counties require food assistance, and that is why Davis started the craft fair.
“It’s helping feed some hungry people, and you’ve got a lot of hungry people here,” Davis said.
Last year’s craft fair brought in $1,600 dollars and nearly 5,000 pounds of food for the community.
The fair also helps entreprenuers, artists and crafters.
Zori Thomas, owner of Soap and Soothe by Jammy Girl sold her bath and body products at the fair for the first time.
“They’re all natural and they will help soothe the skin,” Thomas said.
She says she was able make a lot of sales at the craft fair.
