The Grand Strand Humane Society helped several animals find homes this weekend by waiving adoption fees.
The Humane Society held a “Name the Adoption Fee” event over the weekend. Anyone adopting an animal older than six months could opt to make a donation of their choosing in lieu of the fee.
The shelter decided to hold the event in preparation for its busiest time of the year. According to Director of Community Outreach Jessica Wnuk, the shelter takes in more animals starting in May since that’s when cat breeding season begins. She said that’s also when they typically see an increase in animal cruelty cases.
“Unfortunately we do get cruelty cases more during the summer months. People leaving their pets behind in hotel rooms, abandoning them in cars. We wanted to make sure we find these babies homes so that we have room for the new ones coming in,” said Wnuk.
At the moment, there are approximately 30 dogs and 45 cats available for adoption at the Grand Strand Humane Society.
