UPDATE: 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6:
Surfside Beach Mayor Bob Childs has lifted the town’s curfew and prohibition on entering the ocean, and repealed the town’s state of emergency.
COLUMBIA, SC (WBTW) – Evacuation orders issued by Governor McMaster started noon Monday.
In all, there are around 830,000 people affected. Residents in Zone A of Horry and Georgetown Counties are being asked to evacuate starting Monday at noon.
Curfews
- Robeson County has a curfew for 11 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday
- Horry County has a curfew from 7 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday.
- City of Conway has a curfew from 7 p.m. Thursday until 7 a.m. Friday
- Surfside Beach starting at 8 p. m. Wednesday until further notice
- City of Loris starting at 7 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday

Georgetown County zones
- Zone A: Areas East of Highway 17 to the Atlantic Ocean from the South Santee River and North to the Horry County line, including Sandy Island; areas East of Dawhoo Lake and South of Walker Road and Powell Road to the South Santee River; all low-lying areas along the Waccamaw River, Great Pee Dee River, Black River, and Sampit River South of Highway 521 (17A), including Maryville; and all mobile home residents in the county.
- Zone B: Areas East of Dawhoo Lake and South of Walker Road to Powell Road to the South Santee River; all areas on the Atlantic Ocean side of Powell Road to Alt. US 17 to Highway 521 to Brick Chimney Road to State Highway 51 to Black River Road ending at the Black River; all low-lying areas along the Waccamaw River, Great Pee Dee River, and Black River, and all areas East of them to the coast; and all mobile home residents in the County.
- Zone C: Areas East of Dawhoo Lake and South of Walker Road to Powell Road to the South Santee River; all areas on the Atlantic Ocean side of Powell Road to Alt. US 17 to Highway 521 to Sawmill Road to Indian Hut Road to Carvers Bay Road (State Highway S-22-4) to Plantation Hill Road (State Highway 261) to Old Pee Dee Road to the Northern County Line; and all mobile home residents in the County.
School Closures by county

Government closures
- Myrtle Beach – City public offices and facilities closed Thursday. Recreation centers closed. Parks and playgrounds are closed until further notice. Tentatively will open at 10:00 a.m. Friday,
- Georgetown: Georgetown city offices will be closed to the public Friday. City offices will re-open Monday
- Florence County: County government offices will resume regular operations on Friday.
- Darlington – City of Darlington offices will be closed on Thursday. Thursday’s scheduled garbage and yard debris pickup will be on Friday. Pickup for Friday’s recycling, garbage, and yard debris routes will be on Saturday.
- Robeson – County offices will be closed through Thursday and the public schools have released students through the end of the week.
- Clarendon – County Council on Aging / Meals on Wheels closed Thursday.
Medical evacuations
Hospitals along the Grand Strand are planning to stay open through Hurricane Dorian.
Both Grand Strand Medical Center and Tidelands Health announced their plans Sunday evening to remain open.
Neither hospital system is located in Zone A, which is under an evacuation order from Governor McMaster.
In a press release, Tidelands Health announced measures the hospital is taking to prepare for the storm.
Horry County shelters
According to SC Emergency Management Division’s website, the shelters open in Horry County include:
- Aynor Middle School
- Conway High School
- Loris High School
- North Myrtle Beach High School
- Ocean Bay Middle School
Georgetown County shelters
- Pleasant Hill Elementary School
Officials recommend people bring pillows and blankets and remember any medication they may need.
Identification papers are also important to bring. Shelters’ policies surrounding pets can differ, and officials say evacuees can find out more as shelters open by checking the SCEMD website.
Wednesday shuttles will run a circuit to shelter locations in Georgetown County.
Pickup locations will be:
- Food Lion in Murrells Inlet, 760 Mink Ave. (Hwy. 707 and Hwy. 17)
- Waccamaw Middle School, 247 Wildcat Way, Pawleys Island
- Waccamaw Elementary School, 1364 Waverly Rd., Pawleys Island
- St. Mary’s AME Church, 8833 Ocean Hwy., Pawleys Island
- Tractor Supply Co., 1295 N. Fraser St., Georgetown
- St. Cyprian’s Catholic Church, 1905 Front St., Georgetown
- Food Lion in Maryville, 2234 S. Fraser St., Georgetown
The shuttles will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and will not operate after then.
Dillon County Shelter
Marion County will open a shelter at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Marion High School. Residents should bring blankets and their medications. No pets are allowed in the shelter.
Pickup points and times of departure to the shelter throughout the county are listed below:
- Sellers Town Hall: Bus will arrive at 6 p.m. and depart at 7 p.m.
- Nichols Town Hall: Bus will arrive at 6 p.m. and depart at 6:30 p.m.
- City of Mullins Fire Depart: Bus will arrive at 6:45 p.m. and depart at 7:17 p.m.
- Saffold Building in Brittons Neck: Bus will arrive at 6 p.m. and depart at 7 p.m.
- Housing Authority Office: Bus will arrive at 6 p.m. and depart at 6:30 p.m.
- Grice’s Recreation, Greene St.: Bus will arrive at 6:45 p.m. and depart at 7:15 p.m.
Florence County Shelters
- South Florence High School 3200 South Irby Street, Florence
- Lake City High School 652 North Matthews Road, Lake City
Lee County Shelters
- Lee Central High School
Robeson County shelters
– As of 7 pm Wednesday night, Lumberton High School and Purnell Swett High School will open as shelters. Residents needing rides to the shelters can call SEATS at (910) 272-5873.
Draw Bridges
All draw bridges and swing bridges will be locked down at 6 p.m. Tuesday. SCDNR officers conducted river sweeps this morning to identify boats who may be caught between the bridges and unable to seek safe harbor. River sweeps will continue Wednesday morning.
Preparing for Dorian
The governor also held a press conference earlier in the day Sunday to explain other measures the state is taking to keep everyone.
The National Gaurd has mobilized 1,000 soldiers and airmen in preparation for the category 5 storm.
In addition, The South Carolina Department of Transportation has 2,000 of its employees on notice. The agency has increased the number of motorist assist trucks along Interstates 26 and 95. State welcome centers will be staffed 24/7.
Governor McMaster said he spoke to President Trump moments before the press conference to request a federal emergency declaration.
“I spoke with President Trump by video conference today just a few minutes ago along with other governors and his entire team about the preparation in South Carolina,” Governor McMaster said. “Of course, he offered any and all federal assistance we may need.”
The governor said he expects the declaration to be approved soon.
DSS is preparing to open shelters as needed.
DHEC is notifying private dam owners to be on standby and be ready to act if notified.
