CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW)- Governor Nikki Haley visited Conway Friday afternoon for a Team South Carolina Hurricane Matthew relief event.
Team South Carolina Waccamaw River Day was held to serve residents impacted by the storm from Horry and Georgetown counties.
Dozens of nonprofit organizations along with state and federal officials gathered at the City of Conway Recreation Center. Governor Haley helped to pack boxes full of cleaning supplies, water and other essentials.
She also took time to speak to emotional residents personally impacted by the storm.
“Everything is in one spot and what we want the people of Georgetown and Horry County to know is we’ve got your back. We’re going to try and keep bringing all these things to you but we’re going to be ok. We’re going to build. We may not be 100% whole again but what we are going to do is strengthen the communities in a way that they feel like they’re in control,” Haley said.
People had a chance to register for FEMA, apply for disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, learn more about repairing and flood proofing their home from FEMA, get information about assistance for farmers with crop losses or damage from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency, apply for unemployment benefits from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce and apply for food and financial assistance from the S.C. Department of Social Services.
“DSS will continue to work with them on those issues. The DSNAP, we have not gotten to the DSNAP program because right now we think everything is being taken care of with the EBT and so as of now that’s what we’ve stuck with,” Haley added.
