Governor Haley was in Horry County Friday to make sure people are ready for hurricane season, which official starts Monday, June 1st.
Among other things, she said it’s important that every family knows what to do in the case of a hurricane and urged families to make it a personal responsibility to stay prepared
“Do you’re children know what to do should something happen? What is your evacuation route going to be? Do you have family members that you know your going to stay with? All of those questions need to be answered by every family in South Carolina, should there be an emergency,” said Haley.
The governor re-enforced the importance of Horry County’s “know your zone” policy on evacuations which breaks down the evacuation routes into zones A, B, and C.
Haley also called on businesses to be prepared for the economy after a storm, “the importance of keeping a strong economy after a storm is making sure your small businesses and companies are taken care of…. After you’ve dealt with the evacuation, after you’ve dealt with making sure everybody is safe, it is getting people back to work. It is about jobs, it always comes back to jobs.”
Horry County’s Emergency Management Director, Randy Webster agrees businesses play a vital role in disaster recovery, “getting that economic engine running again is extremely important. We’ve talked a lot about that over the years, that we want to stabilize a disaster, get it to stop, so we can start that economic engine again; and get (peoples) lives back to what will probably be the new normal.”
Webster says the biggest change in this years plan, was addressing the need for more emergency shelters in the county. More than 13,000 emergency shelter spots in 18 locations will be available heading in this year’s hurricane season which is triple the 4,000 in ten locations in 2014.
Authorities are constantly re-evaluating plans, Webster says this years tripling of emergency shelters came after going over a 2012 study, which started “know your zone.”
“We’ve had time now to go back and look more into that study and realize there’s some potential areas out there we can accommodate more shelters in; and that’s what we did with the cooperation from the school district and Red Cross.”
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or “NOAA” predicts a below normal hurricane season in 2015…. but it only takes one storm to devastate a community.
