MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – New rules for parking along the Golden Mile in Myrtle Beach are set to go into effect July 1st, but city council says doubling the pay rate for parking on street ends will not be one of them.
City council approved a plan last month to end most free parking on Ocean Boulevard from 31st to 52nd Avenue North.
Council, however, decided to keep the rates the same as the rest of the city, after initial calls to double the existing rates in an effort to get people to park elsewhere.
Council also announced a third-party will be hired to enforce parking and not police.
500 street signs will inform drivers of the new rules, the first went up Tuesday.
“We purchased the signs, the crews are out there installing them right now. They will be bagged until July 1st, but July 1st is when implementation would start in the residential areas,” said city spokesperson Mark Kruea.
The city will not install any new parking meters or pay stations on street ends, but you’ll still need to pay to park even if there’s not a meter.
You’ll have to call an 800 number or use a smart phone app to pay for your spot.
City residents with decals can park along the avenues and Boulevard for free.
