MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The City of Myrtle Beach declared Sunday September 25, 2016 “Gold Star Mothers Day.” Those mothers, whose children gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, were recognized Sunday in a ceremony put on by the Blue Star Mothers of Coastal Carolina.

The Gold Star Mothers were given the opportunity to speak about their children and their legacy. Many of the families lost their loved ones over a decade ago, but say the pain never goes away and time does not heal.

The Blue Star Mothers, whose children are currently serving in the armed forces, said it’s important to have this community because at any point, they could become Gold Star Mothers.

“We don’t want that to happen,” said Blue Star Mother, Jane Gale. Her son is currently serving in Korea and has been gone for about a year. “But if it does, we know that we have the support of everyone behind us and I know, as a Blue Star Mother, that support is so important.”

Mothers, fathers and family members at Sunday’s event said they are grateful for the support group because they can relate to what other moms are going through.

“Your friends at church, your friends you work with can say, ‘Oh, everything’s going to be fine. Your child will come back from wherever they’re deployed or wherever they are on a base here in the States,'” said Gale. “But Blue Star Mothers know that’s not always so.”
