MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The American Heart Association designated Friday, February 5, 2016, as “Go Red Day” across the nation. As part of the effort to raise awareness about heart disease in women, Dr. Sherief Khalil joined News13 NOW at 9 a.m. on Friday. Khalil, a cardiologist at Inlet Cardiopulmonary and Associates who is on staff at Tidelands Health, talked about the broad scope of heart disease in women. He also covered symptoms and prevention information.

Through Go Red Day, the American Heart Association is working to raise awareness of the toll heart disease takes on women. The organization is asking women to wear red and donate to help fund research.

According to research by the association, heart disease and strokes kill a woman every 80 seconds, but the vast majority of these events are preventable.
