CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – A new initiative will help South Carolina coastal communities prepare for the effects of climate change including sea level rise and more frequent flooding.

A news conference Thursday at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston is announcing the Resilience Initiative for Coastal Education.

The goals of the three-year effort include increasing public awareness of the need for climate change planning, developing an advanced storm surge modeling system and working with local governments on long-term solutions.

The aquarium is currently working with the Medical University of South Carolina, South Carolina ETV, the Department of Energy and Allen University hosting a series of town hall meetings.

The next is Saturday in Charleston with a meeting next month in Myrtle Beach and one in Savannah in October.
