GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW) – Poston Seafood on North Fraser Street was one of few places in Georgetown that did not lose power after Hurricane Matthew.
Owner, Stephanie Elliott, decided to use her good fortune to help those in the community who were not so lucky.
“God blessed us so we’re here to bless them,” said Elliott. “We didn’t lose anything in our freezer. So the ones who don’t have electricity, don’t have water, don’t have a way of cooking or anything, that’s what we’re here for.”
Elliott and her friends handed out shrimp on Sunday and Monday and planned to until the shrimp ran out. Word spread quickly throughout the community and hundreds of people came to get a hot meal.
“At my house, I have no electricity and my food is already gone,” said Roberta Conyers. She said she gets her seafood from Poston’s and was happy to hear they were giving back to those in need.
“I like when people can work together and help each other out ’cause that’s the best thing that can ever be,” she added. “We don’t need to be pulling away from each other right now, we all need to come together.”
Others who stopped by to feed their families said they’re thankful the storm wasn’t worse in their area.
“I just thank God we got our life,” said Tanya Eaton, who was going back home to clean up after feeding her family. She said this act of kindness by those at Poston’s will help her keep moving on.
“We just thank God for them to be here to help us out to give us some shrimp so we can eat and have full bellies,” said Eaton.
