RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – The American Civil Liberties Union, as well as other gay-rights advocates, filed a federal lawsuit challenging HB2 after Gov. Pat McCrory signed the bill into law Wednesday night.
On Wednesday, the North Carolina General Assembly overrode a Charlotte ordinance set to take effect April 1 that impacts transgender people. Charlotte’s ordinance would have allowed transgender people to use the restroom of their gender identity.
“The basic expectation of privacy in the most personal of settings, a restroom or locker room, for each gender was violated by government overreach and intrusion by the mayor and city council of Charlotte,” McCrory said.
The new law requires public schools, colleges and government agencies to designate bathrooms for people based on their biological sex.
The ACLU, ACLU of North Carolina, Lambda Legal and Equality NC will hold a press conference Monday morning at 10 a.m. at the LGBT Canter of Raleigh.
