Gas prices lower this July 4th for travelers

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – More than half a million South Carolinians will travel at least 50 miles from home this July 4th holiday weekend. Travelers can expect to see much lower gas prices this year than last, according to AAA.

This year’s Independence Day weekend will call for the highest number of travelers the Palmetto State has seen since 2001, according to a survey from AAA.

“This holiday weekend South Carolinians will be celebrating our nation’s freedom with family and friends,” said David E. Parsons, President and CEO of AAA Carolinas. “With students home from school, Independence Day is typically the busiest summer travel holiday. It’s the perfect time for a family vacation.”

Despite the traditional seasonal increase in fuel prices, drivers can still expect to pay less at the pump this year than last. On average, motorists will pay 95 cents less per gallon this year traveling roads in South Carolina than they did one year ago. The average gas price in the Palmetto State is $2.44, with the highest average price in Charleston at $2.52 and the lowest rate in Spartanburg at $2.36.
