FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Parents said their goodbyes Saturday morning while volunteers from Greek life and athletic teams helped new students and families unload their cars.
“You know a lot of parents and a lot of students got here early to move in,” said Francis Marion University President Dr. Fred Carter.
But once the parents leave, resident assistants take over.
“We have been here for over a week and we’ve really been preparing every single day,” said resident assistant Amari Boyd.
Boyd says they’re trained on various situations that may arise during the year, and are willing to help in any way they can.
“We’re students as well, so when they know we’re coming we’re adjusted they know that their children are going to be alright. They’re in good hands with good people as well,” added Boyd.
Francis Marion University will welcome more than 700 incoming freshman this year to start their college careers and it’s something they aren’t doing alone.
“We’ll have roughly about 750 to 770 freshman overall and we’ll have about 500 of those live on campus,” mentioned Dr. Carter.
Before students depart from their parents, Francis Marion President Dr. Fred Carter serves up a tasty tradition, as a way to welcome new students and their families
“I’ve been in this business now forty years. The first day of freshman move-in never gets old. It’s just exhilarating for me as it was forty years ago,” said Carter.
Carter says the university also hired twenty four new employees this year.
