MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Early Thursday morning, Horry County Police responded to a shooting at South Island Grill off of Highway 17; the former site of Fat Boiz, a bar the solicitor’s office deemed a nuisance.
Taylor Hansen lives a few blocks away from the bar. She says the gunfire woke her up around 3:45 am.
Hansen says when the bar was Fat Boiz, she would hear gun shots often, but that doesn’t mean it’s something you get used to.
“My one year old is in there so I’m worried about her,” said Hansen.
Hansen says it’s been quiet since South Island Grill opened in the former Fat Boiz location, but according to Horry County records the bar’s new name might be the only change because the owner is the same.
According to Horry County officials, Patrick Brave Jr. is the owner of South Island Grill and the former Fat Boiz.
Three shootings happened in a three month time period at Fat Boiz before it closed its doors permanently in September.
News 13 called Patrick Brave Jr. for comment, however he refused. But back in June of 2015 he told News 13 safety was his number one goal with his bar.
“We got to make sure everybody is safe in there and like I said we thought we had it under wraps it just takes two,” he said.
Back in September, the Horry County Solicitor was in the process of filing a nuisance letter, however Fat Boiz closed its doors before the solicitor could take legal action.
South Island Grill later opened in the same location with the same owner as Fat Boiz.
News 13 asked Horry County Solicitor, Jimmy Richardson, how this could happen.
He said in order for the solicitor’s office to take action a new series of complaints for South Island Grill have to be compiled and brought from the police department.
In any situation, even if the county closes a business due to public nuisances the business will only stay closed for one year and then can re-open.
