Fourth grader biking to school struck by bus in Sumter

SUMTER, SC (WBTW) – The Sumter School District reports a fourth grader was hit by a school bus Wednesday morning after riding his bike to school.

Public Information Officer Shelly Galloway says the student was riding his bicycle to school and was struck by a bus that was leaving the bus loop at High Hills Elementary School, located on a military base at 4971 Frierson Road. The student was wearing a helmet when he was hit, adds Galloway.

The young boy was responsive when he was transported to the hospital by ambulance and was accompanied by his parents, confirms Galloway. School officials did not release any further details about the incident, and did not note if the bus driver faces any disciplinary action.
