BERKELEY COUNTY, SC — Former Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt has pleaded guilty following his arrest for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.

In court Monday, January 11, a judge sentenced DeWitt to 30 days in jail, suspended to three years probation and 60 hours of community service.

On December 28, 2014, DeWitt was arrested by the South Carolina Highway Patrol after he struck the rear of another vehicle at the intersection of Red Bank Road and Henry Brown Blvd in Hanahan in Berkeley County. He then fled the scene. Most of the incident was caught on police dash cam footage.

DeWitt did swear-in in January 2015 as Berkeley County’s Sheriff but later resigned.
