Former Lumbee Tribal Chairman killed in wreck; cause still unknown

LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) – Former Lumbee Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins was killed in a single-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon in Robeson County.

Multiple media outlets report 66-year-old Goins was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

State Highway Patrol says the accident happened on North Carolina Highway 71, north of Maxton. The patrol says neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash and that the cause of the wreck remains unknown.

Goins served for six years as the leader of the roughly 55,000 member Lumbee tribe from 2004 to 2010.
