Former Horry County firefighter charged with sex crime against teen

CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – A former Horry County firefighter is charged with a sex crime against a student, according to police.

An Horry County police report details how 31-year-old Matthew James Oswald engaged in a “sexual incident” with a 17-year-old girl at a home on McCall Loop in Conway. The incident occurred between September and October last year, the report states.

Officers were called to a home on Sandfield Court Tuesday afternoon where the victim told police what happened.

Oswald formerly served as a firefighter with Horry County Fire Rescue. Horry County spokesperson Kelly Moore confirms Oswald is no longer employed with the department. His termination was effective Wednesday.

The police report says the crime reportedly occurred “while the victim was enrolled as a student at which the defendant was acting in a teaching capacity.” However, Horry County Schools says Oswald is neither a volunteer nor a paid employee with the district.

Oswald is charged with sexual battery with a student and, at the time of this posting, is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.
