Former Highway Patrolman dies in Pembroke house fire

PEMBROKE, NC (WBTW) – Officials say a former Highway Patrolman has died after a house fire in Pembroke Tuesday morning.

Robeson County Fire Marshal Stephanie Chavis says the fire was reported at 12:56 a.m.  Prospect Fire Department, Burnt Swamp Fire Department and Pembroke Rural Fire Department responded along with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Arson and Homicide division.

On arrival, fire crews say the single story brick house was fully involved. Chavis says the body of  Michael Wayne Chavis, age 58, of Philadelphus Road in Pembroke was found inside his home after the fire was put out.

According to the county Fire Marshal, the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and the cause of death is pending autopsy findings.

Officials also say they have no reason to believe the fire to be of suspicious nature.
