SOCIETY HILL, SC (WBTW) – Former South Carolina Governor David Beasley joined the call this week for the Confederate Flag to be removed from the Statehouse grounds in Columbia.
In the late 90’s, Governor Beasley worked to get the flag removed from atop the Statehouse dome and moved it to its current location.
Tuesday night, Governor Beasley posted the following on his Facebook page:
“I visited the State House today to tell people that as a former governor, but more importantly a someone who loves South Carolina so dearly, I am gladly lending my support to Gov. Haley’s call for the General Assembly to quickly resolve the Confederate flag issue by moving the flag off the State House grounds.
Out of the tragedy last week, our state has come together in ways that ought to inspire people across the nation. South Carolinians have chosen love instead of hate, …forgiveness instead of bitterness, unity instead of division. This is what our state and nation needs. Let’s be that beacon on the hill.
I know personally that there are well-intentioned people who see the Confederate battle flag’s placement at the State House as an honorable memorial to ancestors. The Confederate Memorial on the State House grounds does that. As to the flag flying, times do indeed change and, this time, for the better. The call to move the flag is an appeal to the better side of our nature, a call to acknowledge that the greatest commandment God issues is to love our neighbor as ourselves. By moving the flag, South Carolina heeds this call.”
