DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – A former Clerk of Court for the City of Darlington pleaded not guilty in court Monday to an embezzlement charge.

April M. Bailey, of Darlington, was indicted Nov. 30 on one count of embezzlement of public funds of $10,000 or more, reports South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson’s office. Officials say when Bailey was employed as the Darlington clerk in January 2013, she “diverted cash funds meant to be paid to jurors for their service to herself.”

Bailey was in court for an arraignment and bond hearing Monday. After entering a plea of not guilty, Bailey was granted a $10,000 PR bond. Bailey was booked into the Florence County Detention Center and quickly released, online records show.

The maximum penalty Bailey could receive is 10 years and a fine in the discretion of the court. Wilson’s office reports Bailey was allowed to turn herself into officials, where she was served with the indictment and arraigned on the charges.

Bailey’s next court date was not immediately known.
