Former CCU golfer Gillis returns for Monday After the Masters

MYRTLE BEACH – Monday After the Masters draws big-name celebrities from all over the country to the Grand Strand each year.

But for one pro golfer, it was like a homecoming. Former Coastal Carolina golfer Tom Gillis played in the annual pro-am tournament Monday. He says it’s his first trip to the Grand Strand in almost 20 years.

“I was just shocked at how much its grown up around here,” he said. “Half the stuff I couldn’t even recognize. It’s a different place, but it’s nice.”

Gillis says he won’t wait so long to return next time, and he’ll probably bring his family, as well.

Bishopville native and PGA Tour pro Tommy Gainey also competed Monday. He’s played in the event several times and says he enjoys being so close to home.
